Lots of support for annual auction
Friday May 28 saw all roads leading to the village hall as villagers and bargain hunters from further afield inspected the goods during the day and returned in the evening to snap up their coveted items. Veteran village auctioneer Eddie Aldridge wielded the hammer – or in this case the soup spoon – with great skill and aplomb. His loyal team of assistants both on the floor and at the desks ensured it all went with a swing. Everything was there – including a sink and some cuddly toys - and there was keen competition for cookers, bowls and sofas. The auctioneer’s dexterity and speed was particularly demonstrated when a prize bundle of badminton racquets went under the hammer. Two bidders were in fierce competition until Eddie called a halt; the woman at the front was bidding against her husband at the back of the hall. She won and duly handed over her £2.50. By 8.30 it was all over. The Village Council committee assessed what little was left and the treasurer totted up the loot - £825 was raised for the benefit of villagers. The chairman thanked all those who had contributed goods and helped on the night and everyone went home delighted with their booty. |
